The Seattle area is a great place to live. If you can handle the long streak of overcast skies in the winter, everything else is great.
Unless you're a sports fan, that is. Our professional sports teams, collectively, have exactly one Championship. In 1976. In basketball. That's it.
And while hope springs eternal for those teams, at least we had good old UW Husky Football, right? As a UW Alum, I love me some purple. UW was a major force in NCAA Football up through the 1991 National Championship team. Followed up with 10...years...slowly...going...downhill to a Rose Bowl victory in 2001. Okay, not bad. Since then? Terrible. Terrible. Terrible. Losing record each of the last five years or so.
But back to the pro teams.
Today, the Seahawks go up 14-0 in the first few minutes against the Packers on two fumbles. Nice! Buuuuuut, that's about it and they lose 20-42. Why do I watch this stuff.
Let's look back, just for giggles:
1996 - Sonics to go the Finals up against Michael Jordan. Guess how that went?
2001 - Mariners tie for best season ever - 116 wins - lose in ALCS to Yankees. Fortunately, soon after this I realized I'm not that interested in baseball. Sorry, I said it, it's true. Note they've never gotten within a Louisville Slugger of the World Series.
2002-2006: Huskies go a combined 14-32. Uh, go Dawgs.
2006 - Seahawks to go the Super Bowl (yes, that's right, first appearance EVER) to face the Pittsburgh Steelers, and have every call go against them. Even the sports writers said the refs were the most important factor in the game.
2007 - Seahawks win a terrible NFC West Division, get past the Redskins (barely) in the first round, then blow a 14-0 lead to get decimated by the Packers.
Blech, kill me now. I'm not sure which has been worse over the last decade: being a Seattle sports fan or being a Liberal. It's been ugly on both accounts.
