I think people have a special affinity for things that were going on in their elementry school and junior high years. In my case, that was dead center in the 80s. What a great time to be a kid.
I was sitting in a meeting the other day when an 80s cultural reference came up and someone made a disparaging comment. Forgive me, I can't remember exactly what it was, but I had the feeling that you get when someone insults your family. Oh, sure, the next thing you'll be telling me is that you 'Thriller' wasn't a great video. Pfft! Fortunately I had backup in this meeting and someone came to my defense when I asserted that parachute pants were, in fact, awesome.
Anyway, I've been thinking about this lately in part due to the upcoming Transformers movie. It's very possible that the movie could be over-the-top and kind of lame. Okay, maybe likely. And for that reason part of me doesnn't want to see it simply because I'm afraid it'll ruin the groove I got when I watched the trailer. That feeling you got when you were 10 and you saw something that just seemed totally awesome. I saw that trailer and I was back playing Atari with my friends Wes and Adrian arguing about who really was tougher: Optimus Prime or Megatron? Like you even have to argue about that one. Jeez.
