I remember when I was a kid and was at the pool for summer camp or whatever, there were two thigs about the pool that I noticed.
First, there were all these grown ups swimming back and forth (laps) for some reason I couldn't understand. Second, they wore nose plugs, which was equally perplexing. What was so bad about getting water in your nose? Wussies!
Well none of this was clear until about a year ago. The ProClub really is great but many of us have major problems with whatever they do to the water there. I haven't spent much time in other chlorine pools to compare with, but some folks are actually switching gyms in favor of saline pools. Anyway, we all have the same problem, which is our sinuses hate the ProClub pools. The ProClub has investigated the issue but hasn't bent to pressure to make larger changes (e.g. move to a non-chlorine-based filtration system).
In my case it's been getting worse and worse for about a year. For a while, I'd sniffle and sneeze for a few hours after I'd been in the pool. Then it was more like congestion. The last few times I've been in there, by dinner time I was totally congested and ended up having a horrible night's sleep. Not fun, and with a winter of massive pool-time ahead of me, not doable.
I've considered leaving the ProClub, but I like it, it's extremely convenient geographically (it's exactly on my way to-and-from home from work), and MS picks up the tab. I saw a friend in the pool and he had some plugs and suggested them, with a warning: "you'll feel like you're drowning for a while, but you'll get used to it."
So I broke down and got some of these guys. He wasn't kidding. But today was my second swim with them and it was better. They feel geeky but it's just like ear-plugs at concerts. It's easy to be self-conscious about them right up until the time you pull them out and your ears aren't ringing. Same thing, except I can breathe, which is nice. But now I'm one of those nose-plug guys.
