So my triathlon season this year is on hold. It's been a rough spring. I started having a weird knee issue on the bike earlier this spring (thought it was IT band but it wasn't) and in the process of trying to fix it, I basically managed to cause some other, much more serious problems. The knee issue was one caused generally by bike fit -- for some reason the Sidi shoes I had were encouraging my right foot to roll outwards, which started giving me major pain around the head of my fibia. That took about 2 months to figure out (tried different pedals, saddle height, q-distance, etc.) and it turned out the real fix was a new pair of shoes. I've still got a little discomfort but it's really leftovers; I've been able to ride hard for which I am incredibly fortunate.
In the midst of that I tried Superfeet. I ran in them twice in early April and basically haven't run since, as I managed to totally thrash my Achilles/Calf/Plantaris area. It's been a bitch to bounce back from so I've been focusing on the bike, which isn't all bad. I've started racing with Team Zoka, which has been fun. I never really thought I'd start racing again. It's also a good humbling experience. I'm way behind on power and some on endurance, which basically means I suck.
In the mean time I've kept doing maintenence on my swimming and things are starting to click. I get in the pool twice a week or so and the last year or so of learning how to swim properly seems to be paying off. So it's not all bad. I've been in PT for the calf thing and I think we're narrowing in on the problem but it's going to be a while. If all goes well I'll only really miss 2 or 3 races I was planning to do and get a good chunk of tri's in the later part of the season. Once I can actually run, I figure it'll only take me a few weeks to get into decent running shape, and that added to much improved swimming and a lot of hard miles on the bike should work out well for me.
